SPRING RIVER FLOWERS AND MOON - CHAPTER 7 PART 2

Chapter 7 Part 2:

"How can Brother Xu say such words? Life and death are predestined, beyond human control, especially in the midst of a fierce battle. It's my fault for not considering Brother Xu's situation thoroughly. While Brother Xu is dealing with the rebellion, he still has to worry about my foolish nephew, putting Brother Xu in a dilemma. I'm truly ashamed."

The yellow-bearded man is Xu Bi, a member of one of the three major overseas Chinese clans in the current dynasty and the elder brother of the current Empress Xu.

"Jing Shen, there's no need to blame yourself; it's my great fortune."

Xu Bi held Gao Lao's hand warmly.

Several generals accompanying him, except for a man with a dark face and a bearded chin, all come from noble families and are familiar with Gao Lao. They dismount and pay their respects to him.

Gao Lao was in a cheerful mood and consoled each of them.

The onlookers couldn't hear what was being said, but they saw the High Minister and Duke Xu talking and laughing, and the crowd couldn't help but get excited, once again bursting into cheers along the road.

After offering his consolation, Gao Lao still had the matter on his mind. He asked, "My foolish and dull nephew was fortunate to come back this time. I heard he was saved by a certain Li Mu from your army on the battlefield. Is this person with the army now?"

Xu Bi smiled and said, "Of course!" He looked towards the dark-faced man beside him.

The man had heard of Gao Lao's name but was seeing his true appearance for the first time. He quickly approached and respectfully saluted Gao Lao.

"I am Yang Xuan, paying my respects to Your Excellency. Li Mu is a subordinate marshal under my command. I will call him to meet you right away!" Saying that, he hurriedly went to fetch him.

Gao Lao looked ahead. In no time, he saw Yang Xuan returning with a person, and the soldiers nearby, with looks of admiration, willingly made way for that person, who was presumably Li Mu.

As Gao Lao fixed his gaze on him, he couldn't help but feel somewhat surprised.

In the army, a subordinate marshal, even in a separate unit, was usually a low-ranking military officer, often commanding only a few hundred soldiers. However, unlike the scions of noble families who might receive the titles of Commandant or even Master of Writing upon enlisting, common soldiers needed to earn their way to become a subordinate marshal with the authority to command their own soldiers, which was not an easy feat.

When Gao Lao led troops, the youngest subordinate marshals he knew were often close to their thirties.

But the military officer who came with Yang Xuan and Li Mu appeared very young, in his early twenties at most, with sharp features, a commanding presence, and a resolute stride as he approached.

By his side, there was a young man of fifteen or sixteen who had delicate and handsome features, clearly from a prominent family, but he was clad in armor. The armor accentuated his slender shoulders. This was Gao Huan, Gao Lao's nephew, whom he hadn't seen in over half a year.

Gao Lao watched the young military officer approach, initially surprised. But then, thinking of the scene where this young man had single-handedly rescued his nephew on the battlefield, his confusion dissipated.

With such exceptional courage, martial prowess, and a powerful presence, it was only natural for him to be promoted to the position of a subordinate marshal at his young age.

"Uncle!"

Gao Huan was in high spirits all the way, and he chatted with the young military officer beside him. The officer, however, seemed rather silent and didn't respond much. Gao Lao paid no mind to it. Suddenly, when Gao Lao saw him and fixed his gaze on him, the officer's eyes lit up. He rushed over, and upon seeing Gao Lao staring at him with a cold look and not saying a word, he felt a bit embarrassed. He slowly lowered his head and stood silently on the side without uttering a word.
