Chapter 7 Part 1:

Danyang County City is located south of the imperial city Jiankang, less than a hundred miles away. Though the city is small, it is well-equipped. As the southern defense of the imperial city, it usually has soldiers stationed there. Moreover, with influential figures from Jiankang frequently moving about, the information flow among the people here has always been more agile than in other places.

In the early days of April of this year, on this day, the gates of Danyang County City were wide open, and the vicinity of the gate was as bustling as a market. People had crowded on both sides of the road outside the gate early on, craning their necks to look southward, enthusiastically discussing various matters.

A few days ago, news arrived that the rebellion of Prince Linchuan, which had lasted for more than half a year, was finally quelled. In the final battle, Prince Linchuan was defeated, forced to retreat into the city. After the city gate was breached, Prince Linchuan fled on horseback, was shot with an arrow, fell from his horse, and was surrounded by pursuers. He was stabbed to death in the chaos. The rest of the rebels were also killed. The troubled Gan River basin, which had been in turmoil for more than half a year, finally returned to peace.

The people of Jiangnan now knew that the situation in the north was tense, with the enemy being strong and us weak. War could erupt at any time. In the teahouses and taverns of Danyang County City, those idle people sitting every day were most likely discussing the cruelty of the Jiehu (a nomadic people) and their atrocities. According to those who had escaped from the north, they had red hair and fangs, resembling fierce ghosts. Eating human flesh was said to be a common practice for them. Talking about it too much made everyone feel uneasy, and even the cries of children at night frightened parents. Mentioning the efforts of the Gao family, who were currently recruiting troops and preparing for war in Guangling in the north, received widespread praise. As for the rebellion led by Prince Linchuan, everyone spoke of it with gritted teeth. After all, the state's fortune was already precarious. If Prince Linchuan's rebellion had added to the troubles, and the court couldn't respond effectively in the north, if the Jiehu crossed the river southward, it would be the common people who would suffer. So, when the news of Prince Linchuan's defeat reached them, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Today, the Uncle of the State, Xu Situ, led the army to arrive in Danyang, and the Grand Minister Gao was also coming from Jiankang to personally greet and reward the meritorious soldiers.

This kind of opportunity was truly rare, so the people had come here early to wait. Besides admiring the military might, they also wanted to see the demeanor of the legendary Grand Minister of Great Yu.

As the sun gradually rose, there was suddenly a commotion near the city gate. People turned their heads to see several figures appearing on the city tower above the city wall, in addition to the soldiers holding weapons in the previous row. Now there were a few more figures that looked like officials of the court.

In the middle, a middle-aged man, wearing a black crown, dressed in vermilion official robes, with a clean and jade-like face, phoenix eyes slightly raised, gazing into the distance. Below his chin, a black and beautiful beard swayed gently in the wind. Standing there, calm and majestic, he emanated an aura of awe without showing anger.

"Gao Grand Minister has arrived!"

Someone exclaimed on the road.

The news quickly spread, and soon everyone knew that the middle-aged man who had just ascended the city tower was indeed the renowned Grand Minister Gao. His reputation was well-deserved, and his demeanor was extraordinary. The crowd was immediately excited, and people rushed over, wanting to get closer to get a clearer view.

There was a stir under the city gate.

"The army has arrived! The army has arrived!"

At this moment, on the road opposite the city gate, several people ran over, shouting loudly.

The people became even more excited and turned back to look. Indeed, in a short time, at the end of the road in the distance, the shadow of a marching army gradually appeared. Flags were flying at the front.

It was Xu Mi, the State Uncle, leading the army, arriving with the soldiers who had meritoriously put down the rebellion.

Amidst cheers, Gao Jie showed a happy expression, quickly descended from the city tower, walked without a horse, and went out of the city gate. He walked towards the approaching army on the opposite road.

The foremost person in the approaching team was riding a yellow steed. On top of it was a person fully armed with a yellow beard. On both sides, there were aides, deputy generals, with a complete retinue, imposing and majestic. As they came, seeing the people welcoming on both sides of the road, a triumphant look appeared in their eyes.

He could see that Gao Gao was leading a group of Jiankang officials on foot to greet him. He deliberately slowed down the pace of his horse. When the distance between them was only a few yards, he rode past, dismounted, and was about to bow to Gao Jie, saying, "Jingshen entrusted his nephew to me, but I almost lost him. It's all my fault! If something happened to Jingshen's nephew, I would be willing to die, and it would be hard to escape blame!"

How could Gao Jie let him bow to himself? With a smile, he stepped forward and lifted the man up.
